Manju Warrier takes charge as the coach of a jail volleyball team

Manju Warrier takes charge as the coach of a jail volleyball team and volleyball coach and her team full of jail inmates is all set to rock the theaters. The movie, which is directed by Fireman fame Deepu Karunakaran, is titled Karimkunnam Six. The movie is touted as a sports movie and Manju plays a rough and tough volleyball coach. The movie is written by Arunlal Ramachandran and the shooting is in full swing at Pujappura Central Jail.

“The team was an already existing one, and we revived it, in connection with the movie,” says director Deepu Karunakaran. “The film will have a lot of humor. Suraj Venjaramoodu, Neeraj Madhav, Joju George, Pashanam Shaji and Nobby will all be part of the cast, some as prisoners,” he adds. The director has roped in the trainer of the national team, Harilal to instruct Manju with the nuances of the game. “He will be the game choreographer as well,” says Deepu.

Deepu Karunakaran, who came into limelight with the Mammootty starrer Fireman, goes for an out-and-out sport flick.  Karimkunnam Six is Manju’s second consecutive collaboration with writer Arunlal Ramachandran after Vettah directed by Rajesh Pillai. “It will be a sports-centric movie that will have a lot of feel-good elements,” hints Arunlal.

When asked the plot and Manju’s character, without revealing many details Arunlal said: “It’s a role that she has never done before. In fact, Manju chechi had agreed to be part of the movie halfway through our first pitch as she said she always wanted to do a movie like Chak De! India. The grounds and sports facilities in Trivandrum will be the main sites.”

Along with Manju, the movie features an ensemble cast including Anoop Menon, Babu Antony, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Gregory, Lena, Sudheer Karamana, Sudev Nair, Shyamaprasad, Major Ravi, Maniyanpilla Raju, Noby, Aneesh, Baiju, Padmarajan Rathish, Santhosh Keezhattoor, Kottayam Pradeep, Jagadish, and Manikuttan.

Reports suggest that Manju has gone through extensive training sessions to master the game. The move will also have fair share of emotional content, as it follows the bond developed between the coach and the inmates. Karimkunnam Six is produced by Jayalal Menon and Anil Biswas under the banner Backwater Studios.
