Actor Mohanlal is all set to join hands with the young brigade of Mollywood directors. The actor will play the title role, Benz Vasu in the movie directed by Oru Vadakkan Selfie fame G Prajith. Earlier, there were reports suggesting Mohanlal’s collaboration with Vellimoonga director Jibu Jacob were taking rounds in social media. This is his second collaboration with a young director in Mollywood.

According to various reports, Benz Vasu will feature Mohanlal as a village taxi driver. The movie is centered on his beloved Ambassador taxi, which he caresses as a Benz and hence the name. His Ambassador Benz is the multipurpose vehicle in the village and an unavoidable presence in all their social events. Vasu has an emotional chord with the car and he never allows others to drive or criticize his car. But, as the village undergoes modernization, his old Ambi becomes obsolete and Vasu struggles to keep his slippery grounds. How he manages to survive with his family of wife and kid is the rest of the story.

G Prajith was shot to overnight popularity with the success of his directorial debut, Oru Vadakkan Selfie, which was the first blockbuster of 2015. He collaborated with Nivin Pauly and Vineeth Sreenivasan to bring life to a story of a film buff. The movie fared well at the box office and hailed for racy and witty script written by Vineeth Sreenivasan, hilarious performances of Nivin Pauly, Aju Varghese and Neeraj Madhav and D Prajith’s fresh treatment.

Benz Vasu will start rolling after Mohanlal wrapped up his commitments that include the Tollywood project Manamantha. Earlier, veteran director Kamal’s name was associated with the project, but that didn’t take off. According to latest reports, M Ranjith will bankroll the movie under his banner Rajaputhra Visual Media. The makers are yet to announce the supporting cast and the leading lady.

Mohanlal’s curtain raiser of 2016 will be Vyshakh ’a magnum opus action thriller Puli Murugan. The movie has already bagged “the most expensive movie” tag in Mollywood and hence raised expectations of fans sky high.  The movie, which is lined up as an Eid release, was initially scheduled for a Christmas release and then missed the deadline.

Actor Mohanlal plays a government employee in Vellimoonga director Jibu Jacob’s next Mollywood flick. The untitled movie also features Biju Menon and Meena in important roles. According to Jibu Jacob, the movie is an adaptation of a Malayalam short story, Pranayopanishath, written by VJ James. Jibu Jacob took almost two years to turn up with his next flick after the surprise hit Vellimoonga, which catapulted Biju Menon’s status as a bankable star in the box office.

The untitled Mohanlal flick tells the story of Ulahannan, a Panchayath Secretary in a rural area. The plot constitutes of the pressures of his official life and the nuances of personal life. Biju Menon appears as Ulahannan’s close friend Venukkuttan and Meena play Ulahannan’s wife. How he overcomes the challenges in his official life with the help of his wife and best friend is the plot of the movie. Jibu Jacob said that the movie explores two sides of Ulahannan, the family man and a government official.

Mohanlal and Meena became the most wanted pair in Mollywood after their record breaking hit Drishyam with director Jeethu Joseph. Both share wonderful onscreen chemistry and they have a number of hits in their credit like Drishyam, Varnapakittu, Olympian Anthony Adam, and Udayananu Thaaram.

Pranayopanishath is well known short story in Malayalam writer by writer VJ James. The story narrates a passionate love life of a middle aged couple. It is considered as one of the best love stories ever written in Malayalam literature and still having a strong cult following. Scriptwriter Sindhuraj adapted the short story for the screen and this is the second time Sindhuraj is adapting another writer’s work. The first was ‘Thappana’, based on a work in Bengali by Ashapoorna Debi.

Jibu Jacob’s last flick, Vellimoonga was the surprise hit of 2014 in Mollywood. The movie came to theaters with cold marketing and got a lukewarm response in the first few days. But the movie took off with the help of mouth-to-mouth publicity and was declared as a sleeper hit. The low budget film went on as far as the second highest grossing Malayalam film of the year, with a box office collection estimated as Rs. 20 Crore.

The untitled Mohanlal flick has Nedumudi Venu, Aju Varghese, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Kalabhavan Shajon, and Sudheer Karamana in important roles. While M Jayachandran and Bijibal compose the music, Pramod Pillai cranks the camera. The movie is produced by Sophia Paul under the banner Weekend Blockbusters.

Director Priyadarshan goes for a change of track in his next Mollywood flick Oppam. The director presents his loyal partner in career, Mohanlal a blind man to unfold a murder mystery. According to latest reports, Oppam doesn’t fall in Priyadarshan-Mohanlal team’s signature style movies like Geethanjali, Chandralekha, Arabiyum Ottakavum P Madhavan Nairum, and Kili Chandan Mampazham.

Mohanlal plays a visually challenged person, who happened to be the eye witness in a murder mystery. The complete actor appears as a visually impaired lift operator, who can identify people with their characteristic body odor. But, his gift turns out to be a curse when he lands in the middle of a murder mystery. The movie is touted as a cat and mouse game between the witness and the killer.

Actors Vimala Raman and Sanchita Shetty will play the female leads in the movie. The movie marks Vimala Raman’s comeback after a short gap after she left Mollywood donning some memorable characters. Even though she was not active in Mollywood, the actor had a handful of roles in Kollywood and some promising offers from Sandalwood.

Sanchita Shetty is a familiar face in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu language and Oppam will mark her Mollywood debut. “Sanchita Shetty has been roped in to play the female lead in the film. The movie is a crime thriller and focuses on the character of Mohanlal who is playing the role of a blind man in this film,” reveals director Priyadarsan. This is the first time Mohanlal plays a full length blind character in his long career.

Samuthirakani, who had an earlier Mollywood outing with Mohanlal in the M Padmakumar flick Shikkar, plays the bad guy in Oppam. The movie also features Nedumudi Venu, Samuthirakani, Kalabhavan Shajon, Aju Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Anusree, Balaji, Anas, Benny, Madan Mohan, and Sreeya Ramesh in important roles.

The movie will hit the screens as Onam release. “Revealing the official title of the movie Oppam. Mohanlal starring Oppam is directed by ‪#‎Priyadarshan and produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner Aashirvad Cinemas. The movie will be the Onam release,” the makers posted on the official Facebook page of Oppam.

Four Music team composes the songs and Ekambaram cranks the camera for Priyadarshan. Ayyappan Nair is the editor and Rafeeq Ahammad and Madhu Vasudev pens the lyrics. Oppam is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner Ashirvadh Cinemas.
